Early Music

Head of programme: Univ.-Prof. Michael Posch
Vice head of programme: Univ.-Prof. Mag. Ulrike Engel

Major Subjects

The Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna has offered degrees in Early Music since 1994, with the practice-oriented training focussing on the realisation of music literature from the Ars Nova to the start of the Romantic era on suitable historical instruments, while considering and researching historical sources.

The teaching concept includes personal initiative and individual responsibility of the students as well as regular teamwork between lecturer and students at the same time. The friendly, but work-intensive teaching atmosphere relates to historical models from music education.

As well as individual instrument tuition and training in figured bass, the central focus is on drafting chamber music pieces using internal research and developing independent organisational structures to form the ensembles needed to perform these in the appropriate stylistic manner. The range of courses offered is enhanced by the intensification of contacts and cooperation with comparable international educational institutions for Early Music and a continually updated range of concerts and masterclasses by internationally renowned artists.
