After his education at the Johann-Joseph-Fux-Conservatory from 1981 to 1986 and at the University of Arts in Graz from 1986 to 1992, Arno Steinwider completed his flute studies with Wolfgang Schulz at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna from 1992 to 1993. In addition, he received composition lessons from Hans Werner Henze in Rome from 1983 to 1985.
He has performed as a soloist on various stages in Europe, including the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Smetana Hall in Prague, the Stefaniensaal in Graz, the Wagner Hall in Riga and the Festival for New Music in Darmstadt, the European Flute Festival in Frankfurt and the Biennale in Zagreb. He has also worked with renowned composers such as Isang Yun, Vinko Globokar, Klaus Huber, Hans Werner Henze and Gerd Kühr.
In addition to his solo activities, he has also participated in orchestras and ensembles under the direction of Fabio Luisi, Milan Horvat, Justus Frantz, Marcello Viotti, Roy Goodman, Jordi Savall and Heinrich Schiff.
He has received several awards for his work, including the appreciation prize of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research and first prize at the Schubert Competition in Cremolino and the Concorso Int. di Flauto Vipiteno. He was also a scholarship holder at the European Music Academy in Bonn.
As a guest lecturer, he has held lectures and courses in the field of contemporary music at various universities and conservatories worldwide. Most recently, he was festival director at the Musikforum Viktring in Klagenfurt and has been with the Taggenbrunn Festival since 2022.
After three years of teaching at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz from 2004 to 2007, Steinwider was appointed professor at the Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien, where he also holds the position of study programme head for Wind and Percussion Instruments and, since 2016, that of study programme coordinator for Music Education – Voice and Instruments (IGP).
In 2017, he became Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Music, and in 2023 he became Dean.
