Univ.-Prof. Michael Posch

Professor Michael Posch was born in Klagenfurt. He completed his recorder studies under E. Mimura at the Corinthian State Conservatorium (performance diploma with honours), with H.-M. Kneihs and H.-M. Stiegler at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, as well as with K. Boeke at Trossingen University of Music (degree graduation).

In 1991, he founded the UNICORN ensemble and has been its musical and scientific director since then. Furthermore, he is a member of the "Accentus Austria", "Oni Wytars" and "Clemencic Consort” ensembles. He is also a guest performer in "Concentus Musicus" (directed by N. Harnoncourt) and “Armonico Tributo Austria” (directed by L. Duftschmid). His concert work has not only taken him to nearly every country in Europe, he has also travelled to Moscow, Canada, Taiwan, Morocco, Israel, Jordan, Syria, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Lebanon, Turkey and Iran.
He has recorded 16 CDs to date with the UNICORN ensemble, including a series of 10 CDs with Naxos and another series in collaboration with Schloss Tirol and ORF. Michael Posch has featured as the soloist on 65 CDs and has been involved in various ensembles for early and contemporary music. He is an interpreter of contemporary recorder literature – both as a soloist and as part of a chamber music group (e.g. with the “Österreichische Kammersymphoniker”).
He is the co-author of a publication on the introduction to early music, member of countless competition juries and, since 1996, has given regular master classes for recorders and mediaeval music, seminars about the performing practice of early music and lectures on recorder-specific issues. He also supports students in their Master’s degrees in mediaeval music at Fontys Conservatorium Tilburg (Netherlands) in his capacity as a guest professor.

Michael Posch has worked at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (previously known as the Konservatorium Wien and the Konservatorium Wien Privatuniversität) since 1994. in 1998, he became the chairperson of the Early Music Department and has been the programme director for the Early Music degree since October 2013. In February 2014, he was appointed Dean of the Music Faculty.
