Department for Early Music

Head of department: Univ.-Prof. Michael Posch
Vice head of department: Univ.-Prof. Mag. Ulrike Engel

Major Subjects

Since 1994, the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna has been offering Early Music studies that focus on music literature from the Ars Nova to the Romantic period on instruments appropriate to the respective epoch.
Consideration and research of historical sources form the basis for a continuously updated understanding of historically and culturally informed performance practice.

The core elements of our studies include individual tuition, basso continuo practice, chamber music, baroque orchestra, historical dance, historical drama and the development of organisational skills. In addition, we offer artistic and academic courses with a wide range of research opportunities.

Our practice-orientated teaching concept promotes the students‘ own initiative and personal responsibility. At the same time, we attach great importance to team teaching, especially in the area of chamber music.
Furthermore, cooperation with international training centres for Early Music as well as regular concerts and masterclasses by internationally renowned artists enrich the range of courses on offer.

The 30th anniversary of the Institute of Early Music will be celebrated in the 2024/25 academic year with a variety of artistic and academic events, masterclasses, workshops and concerts.
