Accompaniment can be attended in three branches of study:
Students should be equipped with the artistic and academic skills to develop musical masterpieces of all stylistic eras, resulting in the ability to work skilfully with instrumentalists and singers.
ZkF lecturer: Denise Benda
The master’s programme Instrumental Accompaniment is aimed at pianists who wish to pursue a career of an instrumental accompanist (correpetiteur) and/or chamber musician playing duo repertoire with another instrument. Students independently form one or several duos with students from other study programmes of the university, giving rise to a wide range of repertoire and performing opportunities. The aim of the programme is to provide instrumental, artistic and practical training up to the highest level and to acquire competencies to enable graduates to enter professional practice as instrumental accompanists and chamber musicians in the best possible way.
Within the framework of the central artistic subject (ZkF), students receive a professional orientation. They learn to respond to the special (technical and aesthetic) characteristics of the instruments to be accompanied and acquire comprehensive knowledge of how to create musical content, rhythmic structures and harmonic sequences in a tonally balanced way. Interactive chamber music making as well as independent and instructive rehearsal work with instrumentalists are practiced. In the ZkF lessons, a comprehensive, wide-ranging and representative chamber music repertoire (duo with piano) as well as instrumental concertos of all stylistic epochs are developed. The repertoire is coordinated with the pieces played in the various instrumental classes during the Praktikum Klassenkorrepetition. This practicum is one of the most important courses in the programme, as it allows students to gain correpetition practice directly in the classroom of the various instrumental classes.
Collaboration and networking with students and faculty in the string or wind instrument departments is an essential part of the program and provides opportunities for correpetition students to accompany in class recitals, examinations, practice auditions, selections, competitions, and master classes. Other courses such as score playing, playing to a conductor, opera and song correpetition broaden the scope of this master's programme. Various chamber music projects complement the diverse training and also contribute to the students' further podium experience, with the ZkF always acting as an interface between the various disciplines. In addition to the compulsory courses, the student can choose personal focal points from a range of elective courses and acquire further qualifications with regard to the career goals they are pursuing.

The Master’s Programme in Collaborative Piano (Art Song and Oratorio) aims to educate pianists as highly qualified collaborative artists specialising in art song and vocal repertoire. The programme is conducted in close and continuous collaboration with the Song and Oratorio class led by Birgid Steinberger.
During the course of study, pianists and singers form permanent song duos, which are regularly coached jointly by the principal subject teachers of both study areas. Instruction is based on a balanced combination of individual lessons, ensemble coaching, and group classes, fostering both individual artistic development and refined chamber music collaboration.
The central focus lies unequivocally on the stylistically differentiated interpretation of the art song repertoire in a variety of languages. Song analysis, textual understanding, and poetic interpretation are systematically deepened and form the artistic foundation of the programme. Work on oratorio arias broadens the repertoire and sharpens stylistic awareness.
A key component of the programme is the regular collaboration and accompaniment within the Voice and Opera degree programme.
In addition, students participate in intensive joint courses, in particular Song Interpretation with Ian Bostridge.
Masterclasses with internationally renowned song pianists and singers, as well as targeted preparation for concert projects and international competitions, complete the programme and prepare students in a practice-oriented manner for the demands of a professional artistic career.
