Vortrag und Workshop „Restructuring Hierarchy Within and Between Jazz and Classical Orchestras“ mit Emiliano Sampaio

Fri, 17.06.2022, 12:00‒16:30  Uhr

12:00—13:00 Uhr: Vortrag
13:30—16:30 Uhr: Workshop

In form of a one-hour lecture, Dr. Emiliano Sampaio will present an example of how artistic research moves between scientific research and artistic practice in a cyclical movement, which makes art and research feed each in a loop process. He will discuss his artistic research in detail clarifying the research question, research object, methodology, process and findings, giving an overview of a four-year artistic research.
Dr. Emiliano Sampaios investigation was based on artistic exploration as a way of questioning the established vertical hierarchy that tends to be present in large jazz ensembles, asking the main question: How can we establish communication between jazz and classical musicians, empowering them to engage in collaboration in large ensemble contexts? His research produced an important outcome by thinking music for large jazz ensembles where the „invisible wall“ between jazz and classical musicians is put into question and new hierarchies are constructed through innovative notation, rehearsal methods, and orchestra disposition adaptations.
After the lecture, a three-hour workshop will involve all students in collective practical work. There they will have contact with the compositions (work-in-progress) from students and will have the chance to apply the concepts discussed in the previews lecture. Ideas such as shared leadership, alternative hierarchy, and new concepts of conducting, composing and notation will be discussed in a real context with students' material. Summarising, the workshop will introduce artistic research to the students in a practical way and aim to show them how research and artistic practice can profit from each other.
As a result of lecture and workshop, students will be encouraged to develop their artistic research projects in the future, especially by having experienced how it can open new horizons for artists and researchers and ultimately can transform society through its innovative way of looking to the world.
