Workshop „Moroccan Gnawa Music“ mit Mehdi Chamma

Mi, 25.02.2026, 10:00‒14:00  Uhr

Gnawa music has inspired many jazz musicians through its hypnotic rhythms, resonant bass lines, and improvisational call-and-response style rooted in sub-Saharan African traditions.
In this workshop, the origins of the Gnawa tradition, its rituals, songs, and the role of key instruments such as the guembri, qraqeb, and tbel are explored. Through live demonstrations on guembri and guitar, Mehdi Chamma breaks down rhythmic structures, call-and-response techniques, and stylistic patterns. The workshop also presents modern adaptations that bring Gnawa rhythms and harmony into dialogue with drums, bass, and guitar.
