Lecture 1: Women in Broadway Musical Theatre from the 1950’s to Today

From Maria in The Sound of Music to Elphaba and Glinda in Wicked to Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton, vibrant women characters have graced the Broadway musical stage, singing and dancing their way into the hearts of audiences. At the same time, these characters are in conversation with U.S. society, both reflecting and shaping cultural values about gender. In this talk (with clips and slides), Wolf will lead a journey through Broadway musical theatre history from the 1950s until today to examine what women do in musical theatre and why it matters.

is a Professor of Theater and American Studies and Director of the Program in Music Theater, Princeton University, New Jersey, USA and Co-editor of The Oxford Handbook of the American Musical.
