Lecture 2: Sondheim’s Women and University Musical Theatre in the Age of #MeToo

The women characters in Stephen Sondheim’s musicals, such as Joanna in Company, the Witch in Into the Woods, and Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd, are among the most complex characters in the musical theatre canon. They are challenging and rewarding roles to sing and to act. They also ask performers to embody characters who are wronged, dismissed, or demonized. What is the appeal and what are the trials of these roles for college-age actors? In this talk (with slides) based on interviews with directors, actors, and designers, Wolf examines why young theatre makers are drawn to such characters and how they navigate these roles in in the age of #MeToo.
