Walter Jurmann Singing and Interpretation Competition

commemorating the 50th anniversary of Walter Jurmann's death

To preserve the musical heritage of Viennese composer Walter Jurmann (1903–1971) for the younger generations and to encourage engagement with this world-famous and yet very often unknown world musician, the Walter Jurmann Singing and Interpretation Competition will be held for the fifth time in 2021.
The opportunity to learn new things while having the opportunity to win a scholarship is intended to support the development of the repertoire of Walter Jurmann’s music. A large amount of sheet music has been archived by the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna, making it accessible for students.
In 2021, for the first time the competition will take place exclusively online.


Registrations and Deadline for Entries:
Registration must be sent by Tue, 27 April 2021 (deadline for entries) exclusively by e-mail to Bettina Szopinski (b.szopinski@muk.ac.at) and must include details of name, date of birth, telephone (ideally mobile number), e-mail address, programme (three songs) and study programme. Registrations will be accepted in the order in which they are received, the date on which the email is sent will apply. Participants will be notified.


Eligibility to Participate:
Students from the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna) within the faculties of vocals and opera, musical theatre, drama and diploma programmes for classical operetta, and similar, are eligible to take part.

Age limit: birth years 1989—2004


Competition programme:
Participants in the competition are expected to perform three songs, chansons or songs by Walter Jurmann, one piece should be from the composer's English or French repertoire. The submission of these pieces must be made by video (or YouTube video). The recordings for this can either take place with live piano accompaniment in a rehearsal room of the study programmes or be made privately by the candidates. Please note that the current COVID-19 safety measures of the MUK must also be complied with on these recordings!

The following are expressly forbidden
  Film editing or filmic conversion
  Sound editing of the videos
  Full costuming

If required, props may also be used.

The song titles and recordings or YouTube links must be sent to b.szopinski@muk.ac.at by 12 May 2021 (closing date for videos).


Jury:
A renowned jury made up of artists, teachers and cultural managers will evaluate the submitted videos.


Prizes:
1st Prize: € 1.500,– scholarship
2nd Prize: € 1.000,– scholarship  
3rd Prize: € 500,– scholarship


Award ceremony:
The jury result will be announced in mid-May 2021. The winners will receive a certificate and the scholarship with the notification of their success in the competition.
