Gottfried von Einem Prize

Competition for the interpretation of contemporary music of the Music and Art University of the City of Vienna in cooperation with the Gottfried von Einem Music Foundation

For the first time, the Gottfried von Einem Prize will be offered to instrumentalists studying at one of the seven Austrian music universities. In addition to compulsory pieces by Gottfried von Einem other works of contemporary solo literature are to be presented for the competition. The task ist to raise awareness of the connection between 20th century music and current developments.
The competition will be held online. Submissions are possible until June 30, 2022.

Active students (bachelor's, master's, diploma students) from the instrumental subjects oboe, clarinet, piano, harpsichord, guitar, violin, viola, violoncello and double bass at the following universities are eligible to participate:

  • Anton Bruckner Private University Upper Austria
  • Gustav Mahler Private University
  • Jam Music Lab — Private University for Jazz and Popular Music Vienna
  • University of Music and Performing Arts Graz
  • University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna
  • Mozarteum University Salzburg
  • Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna

 

PRIZES

Gottfried von Einem Prize

The prize is provided by the Gottfried von Einem Music Foundation (siehe www.gottfried-von-einem.at) and is worth EUR 3.000, —.


Special Prizes

The International Society for New Music (IGNM, www.ignm.at) provides three special prizes:

  • IGNM Austria Prize, EUR 1.000,—
  • IGNM Anniversary Prize, EUR 1.000,—
  • IGNM Gender Prize “Sophie-Carmen Eckhardt-Gramatté”, EUR 1.000, — for “the best interpretation(s) of a work by a female composer living and working mainly in Austria.”

 

COMPETITION JURY

The jury is made up of artists, art educators and cultural managers. Chairman without voting rights: Prof. Walter Blovsky (Gottfried von Einem Music-Foundation)

 

PARTICIPATION

The deadline for submissions is June 30, 2022. Please send an e-mail with the following informations:

  • your contact details (telephone number, e-mail address)
  • the confirmation of registration of your university
  • a video recording (without editing!) of the entire artistic program in a total duration of 20 to 30 minutes — the program sequence is up to you
  • another video (without editing!) of 2 to 5 minutes in which you briefly introduce yourself in German or English and in which you discuss your personal approach to the works you perform — please provide the links to a video platform such as Dailymotion, Vimeo or YouTube accessible till September 30, 2022
  • an artistic CV of 1.000 to 2.000 characters
  • a printable photo (portrait, 300 dpi with copyright informations e.g. “private” or the name of the photographer)

ARTISTIC PROGRAMME

The artistic programme consists of 2 parts:

Part 1: Gottfried von Einem solo work for the respective instrument

  • Aspekte. Four portraits for solo oboe op. 102
  • Der einsame Ziegenbock. Suite for clarinet solo op. 89
  • Seven portraits for piano op. 109
  • Two caprices for harpsichord op. 36
  • Three studies for guitar op. 34
  • Sonata for violin solo op. 47
  • Sonata for viola op. 60
  • Music for violoncello solo op. 108
  • Sonata Enigmatica for solo double bass op. 81

Part 2:
One (or more) solo work(s) of music to be freely chosen

  • from 1950 (date of composition) for female composers (w) or
  • from 1980 (date of composition) for male composers (m)

Works with electronics, feeds, media, etc. are possible.

 

AWARD CEREMONY

The competition jury reserves the right to split the prizes if necessary. The winners will be informed in September.

The award ceremony will take place on 19 October 2022 at 6.30 pm with musical presentations of the prize winners at the MUK.podium at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna (Johannesgasse 4a, 1010 Vienna).
